Aamir Khan, the perfectionist from Bollywood, is probably the only actor star who has an absolutely clean track record as far as his films are concerned. For the last ten years, all his films have been super-hit. Aamir Khan has always been someone who has been a trend setter rather than a trend follower. He started off his innings in Bollywood in a young love story film, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, which was not the trend then, definitely. At the helm was a debutant director, Mansoor Khan, and the heroine cast opposite him, Juhi Chawla, was a new comer too. If tales are to be believed than it is said that Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak did not even find any buyers at the time because no one thought that this young teenager called Aamir Khan, with a height of 5 feet something and a chocolate boy looks could pull off a film alone. Tahir Hussein had to release the film himself and the rest as they say is history. Actually, QSQT was his first film as a hero. He started off as a child artist in his father, Tahir Huseein’s films, ‘Yaadon Ki Baaraat’ (1973) and later Madhosh(1974), then in his younger days, in a film titled Holi directed by Ketan Mehta (1984) before making his debut as hero in 1989 with QSQT.
Aamir Khan went from strength to strength in successive films, even though there were some atrocious films by Aamir Khan on the way to where he is today. Things changed for him after probably the one movie where no one gave him a chance and that Hindi film was Sarfarosh, directed by John Matthew Matthan. Cast as a tough Additional Commisioner of Police, Aamir excelled as Ajay Singh Rathod and it is this film Sarfarosh, after which there have been almost no films which have been flops, except probably for Mela.
Every film I do means a lot to me. The failure of Mela, definitely made a difference to me. I am not comfortable with the idea of my films not releasing to their full potential.
The only blemish (if you can call it that) on Aamir’s untarnished image is his unfortunate divorce with his first wife, Reena Dutta. Though Aamir does look happier and more chilled out after he got married to Kiran Rao who incidentally was an assistant director for the film Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Govarikar. From Holi to becoming a director with Taare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan has truly proved that he is indeed much bigger at the box office than any of the other Bollywood stars like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan or Saif Ali Khan.
