List Of Bollywood Movies Based On Cricket
There have been very few films in India which are based on any kind of sports. One name that comes to mind is Jo Jeeta Vahi Sikandar and many many years before that Naya Daur, where it is a matter of life and death when Dilip Kumar races a horse carriage against a bus which is threatening to ruin their livelihood. There have also been a few which are based on the biggest sport in the country- Cricket. it is a well known fact that cricket and Bollywood has had a lover’s relationship, literally. After the world cup 2011 final win, there have been so many stories floating about cricketers dating Bollywood starlets. For example, the latest news is that Virat Kohli is dating Sarah Jane Dias and Shreesanth seems to be smitten by the super sexy Bollywood actress, Riya Sen. But even with this kind of a relationship, Cricket was always a taboo when it came to using it in Hindi movies. More often than not, the films with a backdrop of cricket, have bombed at the box office. Let’s take a look at these Hindi movies which had cricket as their backdrop. Some of the movies were hilariously disastrous until Lagaan came along and created history in more ways than one.

A film based in the 19th Century in an imaginary Champaner village of India when the British were ruling. Due to some fracas between Bhuvan (Aamir Khan) and the British Office of the cantonment, Russel (Paul Blackthorne) about the tax (Lagaan) the villagers need to pay to the British, it is decided that the whole issue will be resolved by playing a cricket match. If Bhuvan and the villagers win, they do not have to pay Lagaan for 3 years and if they lose they have to pay three times the tax. A matter of life and death, Bhuvan goes about convincing his fellow villagers to join him in this fight for freedom against the oppressor. Along with this there are other tracks in the movie about the love triangle brewing between Bhuvan, his lady love from the village, Gauri (Gracy Singh) and the British white girl, Elizabeth (Rachel Shelly). The film was extremely unique as far as the story and the treatment was concerned and the music by the Oscar Winning composer, A.R. Rehman was outstanding.
